Kalmbach Media, a publisher of science and hobby magazines and websites, is looking to add a well-organized, positive and energetic person to its Discover web team. The digital content coordinator will write engaging articles about science topics regularly, in addition to helping grow the brand's digital presence by deploying social media and newsletter strategies.

The ideal candidate is someone who wants to get involved with all aspects of digital content: its creation, its distribution, analytics, and workflow and organization.  This individual will work cross-functionally with members of the editorial and marketing teams.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (Fall into 3 main categories):

Editorial/Writing (more than 50% of role)

  • Writes digital content for DiscoverMagazine.com using SEO best practices. The ability to write articles about science topics in a way that is both approachable and compelling is vital to this position's success.
  • Interviews subject matter experts and researches topics to find source material for web stories.
  • Contributes timely and relevant story ideas that are based on audience trends and analytics.
  • Edits and posts editorial content from contributors.

Social Media

  • Creates and maintains social media calendars for the Science Group's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages by utilizing Discover's inventory of new and existing content.
  • Schedules social media posts using scheduling tools.
  • Coordinates with the digital tam to actively maintain social media communities and helps manage engagement across all platforms. This includes responding to direct messages and moderating comments.
  • Analyzes performance and impact of social media efforts and shares results with digital team members.

Newsletters/other projects

  • Curates content for all weekly science newsletters and works with the digital team to improve newsletter performance and engagement.
  • Keeps current on industry trends in digital content, social media and newsletters.
  • Helps with additional audience development and website projects as needed to achieve our goals.


  • Bachelor's degree in journalism is preferred.  Will also consider applicants with educational backgrounds in communications, marketing or related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience; publishing/media industry a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience with creating digital content under deadline pressure.
  • Displays an ability to coordinate and communicate effectively between internal marketing and editorial teams, as well as freelancers.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
